Over the past decade the business
environment has become increasingly dynamic, reflecting the global trend
towards economic liberalization. New geopolitical concerns, the gradual
removal of international trade barriers, rapid technological
advancements are just a few of the factors that have had a major effect
on business management practices and on the role of leaders. Bearing all this in mind, as well
as recent developments in the labour market, the question of succession
and sustainability is one of the key issues that are faced by today’s
leaders. It takes smart leaders and excellent and diversified leadership
skills to manage the ever-increasing expectations of different
stakeholders (owners, employees etc). Leadership thus becomes and
remains a topic of great significance for many countries in the Baltic
Region. Leaders are vital to the success
of any organization. It is not just a question of being a “star”. It is
also about building a solid foundation of honesty, integrity, and
accountability. It is about working hard to build relationships and
emphasising teamwork in everything you do… It is about focusing on the
positive, eliminating the negative and creating the right atmosphere for
winning attitudes… What kind of leadership challenges
are companies and academia currently facing in ensuring continuity and
sustainability? What are the needs and expectations of today´s
companies? What could and should be the role of business schools in
educating the “new generation” of leaders to satisfy the expectations of
companies and what should be the contribution of companies? What are
the future models for partnership? What do we expect from the next
generation and how do we attract, motivate and lead them? How do we
find, develop and keep talented people? What are the key aspects leaders
have to keep in mind to ensure that there will be suitable people to
perpetuate the work of today’s leaders when their time is due? These are just a few questions
that were addressed during the conference. The
conference was designed in such a manner that participants from both
academia and the corporate world benefit from the contribution of
keynote speakers with unrivalled leadership experience. Participants
also contributed their invaluable knowledge and expertise, thereby
enriching the discussion and ensuring that the topic is relevant for
both the academic and corporate worlds.
This conference was a place
for debate and dialogue, a platform for exchanging experience, and a
meeting place for all parties involved in leadership development.
